Move Over Home Depot®: Personal Growth Plan D-I-Y

Red Toolbox with Tools

Home Depot®'s pride is helping people with DIY (do-it-yourself) projects. From asking questions, to learning techniques, to buying supplies, the orange warehouse morphs into a one stop shop for building, shifting, fixing and changing anything in your home or someone else’s.

But every day, moms build, shift, fix and change things within their families with very little resources other than a few books, a couple of no-fail websites, and calls to mom or friends. But they do have a resource that even Home Depot® can’t match – themselves. Although most people would laugh at the phrase “personal growth plan for moms”, it’s actually a life giving aspect too often overlooked. Personal growth is often minimized because it requires time and effort – two resources which most moms reserve for their children, not themselves. To set aside time, effort, and a little money do focus on themselves would be selfish. Right?

But the lack of a personal growth plan for moms at any stage means the whole family suffers in significant ways. The richness and beauty of mom’s identity is often hidden in the shadows of duty, sacrificing for children, or managing the daily routine. Although “responsible” she shares nothing of herself, just her abilities. Tragically, very few realize that the workhorse view of doing life is passed on to the next generation.

By working on a personal growth plan, moms change the destiny of their children and the next generation – by investing in themselves in some small way. While Home Depot® helps the committed do-it-yourselfer, here is a short primer on personal growth, do-it-yourself style.

Physical
What would you love to do to be more active?

Mental
Consider various avenues of learning including books, classes, or friends.

Creative
Moms generally fall into one of three camps: A) artsy craftsy, B) never touched a paintbrush in my life, or C) somewhere in between. Creativity changes how one looks at life, solves problems, and relates to others. Far from the periphery, creativity fuels motherhood.

Sound selfish yet? Hopefully by this point, the personal growth plan of a mom feels essential, rather than a “nice add-on” to family life. Moms become the family’s Home Depot® of resources with a solid foundation of building, shifting, fixing and changing. They wield a profound new influence coming from a core of authentic identity and truth. When the children say “you’re the best mom ever” – she knows it’s true.
